YEA Camp

Some of our activities may include:

Supermodel Role Models: We will learn, teach and inspire each other with some of the people who have had the most impact in making our world a more compassionate place. We will learn not only about the actions they took, but who they were as human beings -- pulling them down from any pedestal that has them seem super-human or different to us. We are the heroes we have been waiting for!

The Power Shuffle: Taken from Challenge Day, we will do an activity that has us look at the role of privilege and oppression on our lives, putting ourselves and our community into a context that enables us to connect with each other's life struggles and experiences. This critical activity lays the foundation for making a difference in the world.

If You Really Knew Me
: Also taken from the phenomenal program Challenge Day, we will finish this statement with each other: "If you really knew me, ..." We will get to know each other on a level that honors and supports each of us, and that makes community possible at the level we are committed to.

Go MAD!: Go Make a Difference is a sequence of programs in which participants will articulate a social issue of importance to them, create their talking points and feel comfortable speaking about the issue, think strategically about how to address the issue, and then create and share a campaign for how they will make a difference when they get home.

The Lives of Our Dreams: Through art, poetry, spoken word, song, dance, or other creative expression, participants will express what the life of their dreams looks like. We will confront the fears stopping us from making these lives happen, and inspire one another with our ideas, passion, and creativity.

CIA: Compassion Into Action is a program where we examine how we can bring compassion and respect for others into daily action.

A Million Ways to Make a Difference: How many ways are there to address a social issue or even an interpersonal problem we encounter? Probably a million! We'll brainstorm at least 20 and practice thinking outside the box and thinking strategically.

Solo Hike: In exploring the beautiful environment we will be surrounded by, we will each have the experience to hike solo -- don't worry; it won't be for too long, and there won't be any cliffs to fall off! By experiencing the silence and stillness of our natural environment, everyone will have some personal insights that will give us all something to talk about later on. This is a great way to overcome fears, too.

Theater of the Oppressed: A popular education technique using theater as a tool for transformation, theater of the oppressed invites critical thinking and questioning, inviting participants to (1) see the situation in which they live (2) analyze the root causes of that situation and (3) to ACT to change the situation. The technique we will teach, Forum Theater, presents a scene or a play that shows a situation of oppression that the protagonist does not know how to fight against, and fails. "Spect-actors" are invited to replace this protagonist, and act out all possible strategies. The other actors improvise the reactions of their characters facing each new intervention, so as to allow a sincere analysis of the real possibilities of using those suggestions in real life.

And did we mention free time? There's got to be time to rest and hang out and play games and be silly and just do whatever! There's time for that too. We promise.

We can play basketball or ultimate Frisbee, make art and have an open mic. We ask participants on their application what activity they'd most like to do at camp, and we'll see what we can make work.
