YEA Camp

Goal of Day 2: Exploration and Passion

Tuesday was about exploration, on multiple levels, both inward and outward, and connecting to and expressing our passions. We took our first hike of the beautiful trails and asked everyone to visualize and write about some way they would like to change the world. Our campers chose issues such as global warming, reducing violence in their communities, and animal rights. Later, we did a workshop on nonviolent communication, a revolutionary way of communicating in which people take responsibility for their feelings and needs, while honoring others'.

We explored ways people can make a difference in the world, such as writing letters, making movies and showing them on youtube, starting a campaign, or speaking to a decision-maker. We also did an awesome experiential activity where we explored privilege and the gap between "haves" and "have-nots." Tuesday was also the day that campers chose their mentors with whom they'd put together their action plan and who would be their point staff person to reach out to for support after camp. Our CIA activity was watching "The Story of Stuff" to explore the impact of our purchases on the planet and others. We followed that with a "Really Really Free Market", where people exchanged items they brought from home that they no longer needed. One camper was thrilled to find practically unworn sneakers that were his size! Then the campers got to choose what to do for evening activity, and they chose a super fun dance party! Go DJ Roger! If camp had ended after Day 2, we would have already declared camp a total success!
